Per Lynggard, John Aa. Sørensen, WirelessCenter, Copenhagen University College of Engineering, discusses the differences between a traditional radio and a software radio and why a software radio got a future.

It’s indicated that in the future single-waveform, hard-coded radios are going to be obsolete and will progressively be replaced by software defined radios (SDR). This paradigm shift raises a lot of questions, the most important one being “What is the difference between a traditional radio and a software radio and does a software defined radio have a future”?

This seminar uncovers part of the answer by looking into the state of art SDR frame work followed by an architectural highlight of the differences and similarities between the basis single-waveform, hard-coded based radio and the SDR.

Specifically, we will look into the used principles in digital radio communication such as numeric oscillators, multirate signal processing, synchronization circuits, smart antennas and important factors in a link budget.

Furthermore, we will discuss the Ettus USRP based hardware platform block schematics and focus on a SDR application covering “A complete FM receiver”.
