International Civil Engineering Semester

Copenhagen University College of Engineering - ICES

About the programme

Expanding infrastructure leads to many civil engineering projects. Traffic planning, motorways and roads are being decided to shorten travelling time. Traffic on rail is being expanded. Solutions for city centres traffic jam during rush hours are being called for. Bridges and tunnels connecting our islands, and to our neighbouring countries are being discussed and decided. Ports are being extended to serve both tourists and goods. Clean water both for drinking and for nature is an issue of great concern leading to water conservation and cleaning plants. Climate change, leading to more heavy rainfall, calls for advanced calculation of the sewage system to avoid flooding of housing areas.

The Department of Building & Civil Engineering at the Copenhagen University College of Engineering offers an International Semester in the Civil Engineering field, dealing with all these issues.

The semester is offered twice a year. The Autumn semester starting late August to end January and the Spring semester starting February 1st to end June.

The ICES programme

The programme consists of 30 ECTS. The programme is composed by selecting courses within the group of optional courses of 5 or 10 ECTS each, a 'Bachelor Project part A’ of 5 ECTS or 'Bachelor Project part B’ of 15 ECTS. The composition of the programme is decided by the student and the department in collaboration.

All courses are project organised. You work in smaller groups and with engineering assignments from the building and infrastructure industry and the consultants and contractors perspective.

The optional courses are offered within:

The Civil Engineering Field

  • Civil structures including bridges, construction pits, tunnels and ports

  • Traffic planning, road construction, railways construction

  • Environmental engineering:
water, water supply, ground water protection, soil and water pollution ‐ remediation and run off water, waste water systems and treatment

Management and planning

  • Construction management

  • Building Information Modelling

Exams and evaluation take, for the foreign students, place in January and June and students receive their diplomas late January and late June respectively.

Optional courses

The courses are open to both foreign students and Danish students. The optional courses are taught with presentation of theory and engineering methods and combined with students project work. The presentations are in English, and the project work is supervised in English.

Teaching is once or twice a week for each course for a couple of hours. The students work on their project work, together in groups and with ongoing dialogues with the professors and supervisors. The students can work at the Copenhagen University College of Engineering all week, day and night if they wich to.

‘Bachelor Project part A’
The project work aims at providing the basis for a following final project, Bachelor Project B. The Bachelor Project part A includes feasibility studies for a project idea to be planned, designed and calculated in Bachelor Project part B.

‘Bachelor Project part B’
Bachelor Project part B is an engineering task elaborated from a clients need. Bachelor Project part B can be either within ‘Buildings’ or within ‘Civil Engineering’.

The project work is carried out in groups of 2 or 3. The students contact to consulting engineers, construction managers or architects to set up their Final Project.

Optional courses alternate spring and fall. Optional courses depend on the students’ interest, but the last semesters the possibilities have been:
