Why study abroad |
![]() |
The following information will be in English only.
Why study abroad?
A period of study abroad will give you an important academic ballast as well as a cultural enrichment, personal challenges, and an international network.
You will be able to put the knowledge from your studies here at IHK into an international context. Furthermore, the linguistic skills and intercultural insight that you gain during your stay abroad will be of great importance for your options on the job market after graduation.
All DTU students are encouraged to study abroad. To be nominated for an exchange place at one of DTU’s partner universities, you are required to be a full time student and take a full course load of 30 ECTS at the partner university. You must have studied for two years before leaving for study abroad (~120 ECTS). And you must have passed all of the obligatory courses of your study program. Below please find our brochures with general information for IHK students.

you can find inspiration for your potential semester abroad. The web
site is also open for dialogue among students. The web site is in
Danish.
www.udiverden.dk:
includes a lot of information on studying abroad. The homepage is from
the Danish Agency for Universities and Internationalisation (under the
Ministry of Research, Innovation and Higher Education). This Agency is
working to support internationalisation of the Danish study programs in
all kinds of educational bodies including universities and university
colleges.
www.hallonorden.org: This web
site is relevant for you if you plan to study abroad in one of the
Nordic countries. You will be able to find relevant information on
studying, living and working in Finland, Iceland, Norway and
Sweden.
University partners
DTU collaborates with the best partner universities from all over the world. Please find an updated list of current partner universities.
You may find hard copies of brochures and information material from our partner institutions in cassettes under the stairs right outside of the StudyCenter. All of the material we receive from our partners for DTU students is put in these cassettes.
Where to study abroad
Generally, you have a world of opportunities! DTU has a large
number of exchange agreements with partner institutions all over the
world. You will find partner institutions in countries like Chile,
Mexico, Poland, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, France and many other
countries.
You may study for one semester abroad as part of your Danish Bachelor
of Engineering study program (Diplomingeniør- eller
eksportingeniøruddannelse). At each of the study programs you will find
an International Study Program coordinator (see below).
It is also possible for you to do your Internship abroad. Check
with your International Internship coordinator of your study
program.
You can find the relevant person with e-mail address at the end of this information.
Two options
Studying at a
partner institution
If you choose to go on exchange to one of DTU’s university partners,
you do not have to pay the tuition fee at the host institution (in most
cases). DTU has about 150 university partners to choose among
(universities partners in the US and in Australia require you to pay
tuition).
Note that some of the institutions outside of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and the US also have programs and courses taught in English. A good example is the European Project Semester progam taught in many European cities (www.europeanprojectsemester.eu).
Even though you have been selected for a tuition-free exchange place, there may be other fees you must pay like administration fees, activity fees, library fee etc.
You must apply for an exchange place through the International
Office.
The application deadlines depend on where you would like to go. You can find the application deadlines here:
Studying at a
non DTU partner institution
– with the SU study abroad grant for SU eligible students
If for some reason you wish to study at a non-partner university, it is
possible to study as a free-mover (also named non-degree seeking
student or international guest student). Please note that you will have
to arrange everything yourself and you must be prepared to invest time
and energy in preparing your stay, as all contacts to the coming host
institution must be made by yourself. Not all universities accept
free-movers so remember to check at their contact information.
If you are eligible for SU and if you have a preapproval
(forhåndsgodkendelse) of a full semester’s courses of a total of 30
ETCS you can apply for a study abroad grant (Udlandsstipendium). In
this way the tuition fees can be totally or partially covered by the
Danish SU Study Abroad Grant.

Information
meetings: Information meetings about studying abroad will be
held every semester by International Office. The meetings are in
English and Danish and will be held in due time before the deadline for
applying for a place for study abroad.
It is typically most relevant for you to participate when you are in
your third/fourth semester planning for studying abroad during your 5th
or 6th semester.
Dates and locations will be posted on CampusNet.
The spring information meeting was:
14 March 2013 i D 1.82 at 16.00 - In

Travel reports: All DTU students who have been abroad for studying or on an internaship must send in an Obligatory Student Report. The reports are written by IHK students who have spent a semester abroad. The reports give the most recent information on host universities seen from students’ point of view. Among other things you can read about the courses they have taken and how they found their housing; and many other relevant things. Moreover the students have given their e-mail addresses for you to contact them in case you need specific information about the institution where they were studying.
The travel reports are available on CampusNet>Engineering College of Copenhagen>File sharing>Studiecentret>Study Abroad
Information material: Many partner universities send updated material to DTU. You may use the material placed in cassettes outside of the Study Center - it is for all DTU students and may give you supplementary information to what you can find on the internet. Take a look and leave the material in the cassettes for the next student.
Alternatives to exchange
English taught Exchange – and Bachelor of Engineering courses at DTU
Diplom
If for some reason it is not possible for you to study abroad you will still have the opportunity of including an international experience to your study programme at DTU Diplom. You may select courses from our English taught bachelor of engineering programmes. You will need a preapproval from your study programme before signing up for these courses – and the deadlines are 1 May (for the coming autumn semester) and 1 November (for the coming Spring semester).
Read more about these courses here at www.int.ihk.dk/exchange-students
or www.int.ihk.dk/bachelor-programmes
Financing your study abroad
You can find various ways of financing your study abroad, among others;
SU (Danish Education
Grant)
Students going abroad are expected to take their SU with them if they
are eligible for this grant. Therefore, you can only receive SU if your
stay can give you full credit (30 ETCS for one semester) towards your
degree from DTU Diplom. It is important that students going on an
exchange programme remain registered as full-time students during their
period of study abroad and do not apply for a leave of absence from
DTU Diplom.
It is a condition for taking SU abroad that your studies have been approved by IHK and your host institution for full credit transfer. You must inform the DTU SU-office that you are studying abroad or going on an internship for one semester.
For further information on SU see www.su.dk
Scholarship
- ERASMUS – for DTU students. This scholarship is for study abroad at partner institutions and for internships in the EU/EEA-countries (In 2013-14 students will receive approximately 200 EURO per month while studying or working in an internship abraod)
- DTU Scholarship is for study abroad of no less than three months and internships of no less than three months outside of the EU/EEA-countries (The scholarship is approximately DKK 7,000 for a semester). Reserved for students studying at partner institutions only.

Withdrawal
You may suddenly be in a situation wher you are not able to study abroad anyway. This happens for students going abroad as well as for those students who planned to come to DTU to study.
As soon as you have decided NOT to study abroad you'll inform the International Coordinator. We shall contact the partner institution about the withdrawal if you have already applied for the exchange semester with them.
Moreover you yourself must contact the colleagues at the host institution if you have already arranged for accommodation - or made any other kind of arrangement. You may have to pay the first month's rent depending on the time of your withdrawal.
After your return
Compulsory reports on your period of
study abroad
After your study or internship abroad, you must send in an obligatory
student report to the International Office no later than one month
after the completion of the period abroad, regardless of the date on
which you actually return.
Find the report
form of the student reports here (pdf)
CREDIT TRANSFER to DTU of your courses
As soon as you have received the Certificate with your grades obtained at your host institution you must go to your International Education coordinator at DTU Diplom (please see list below) and apply for a transfer of credits. The Certificate together with you signed learning agreement is required in order for the International Education coordinator to evaluate the result of your study abroad period.
After the verification and acceptance the documentation is forwarded to the Study Administration for registration in to the student administrative system (STADS).
